We didn’t say it, they did. “They” being the guys at autoexpress.co.uk who have just recently done a video test of the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S.
This is a big claim. Even though the AMG models never lacked power, the BMW has always been the handling king impressing with its superior steering feel and overall driving dynamics.
The new generation of the C 63 S AMG is set to change all that, and the autoexpress.co.uk guys (through the voice of James Disdale) are catching up to that. The new car has almost nothing in common with the previous version, and the biggest and most important difference has got to be the twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine, substituting the naturally aspirated 6.2 V8.
The emphasis in the new car has been on improving the dynamics of the car, with changes including a wider front track, thoroughly revised electric power steering and a brand new suspension system with three mode adaptive dampers ( an electronically controlled limited slip differential on the S model).
The car is definitely fast (actually, 0-100 km/h – or 62 mph – takes only four seconds), but the sensation of speed is also helped by the new three valve exhaust system which builds up a majestic, growling noise.
But you can’t get over the fabulous new engine so quickly: it’s very grunty, pulling away with ease from as low as 1,750 rpm and all the way to the 7,000 rpm red line.
And the rest… is drifting.
