Mercedes will improve dramatically the Mercedes G-Class icon. The main news is the new body with 10 cm more width. The launch is planned for 2017 and auto motor und sport magazine present the first pictures with a heavy camouflage.
The Mercedes G-Class icon was renewed last year. Launched in 1979, G-Class was updated last year with new engines and a revised suspension with optionally adaptive damping system.
In 2017, after 38 years, Mercedes will completely rebuilt the body and the major change is the 10 cm widened body, that will eventually have 186cm. In this way, the G-Class will provide more interior space and a more comfortable driving position, due to the space increase between the steering wheel and the driver’s door. The added 10 cm width will provide more stability on the road, especially for the AMG versions which are very powerful.
In the first spy pictures we can realize that the body is larger because the door handle of the tailgate is located significantly further from the spare tire than the current Mercedes G-Class.
In order to stand out clearly from the ML and GL, the quadratic design will not suffer changes. Unchangeable will be the emblematic round headlamps, the quadratic shape of the body with sharp edges and the vertical tailgate.
But the aerodynamics will be enhanced for the fuel efficiency and the wind noise reduction.
The rear bumper will be integrated much better to the body and there will be no gap anymore between the body and the bumper. The front bumper is more refined and more aerodynamic and the air intakes are much narrower. Being not so massive like the current generation, the front bumper continue more fluid on the side with wheel arches.
For the first time, Mercedes G-Class looks not so like a military vehicle even will not be a SUV. The G-Class will remain the king of off-road with permanent all-wheel drive, low-range gearbox and three differential locks that can be engaged while on move.
According to our informations, the second direction for improvement after aerodynamics is to reduce weight. There are rumours that the chassis will be built from aluminum that will allow weight reduction with about 375 kg.
There are no informations about the engines but we expect under the hood the new 6 inline diesel and petrol engine generation which will debut in 2017. We believe that the G-Class base versions will be offered with a 3.0 liter 6 – inline petrol with 367 HP (Mercedes G 350) and a 3.0 liter 6-inline diesel with 258 HP (Mercedes G 350 d).
The G 500 with the new 4.0 liter V8 bi-turbo will remain in the model range as the G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG, addressed to the rich people from Asia.
The surprise is that Mercedes will continue to provide the current 461 model for the military purposes as it still exists enough demand coming from the major world armies.
The new civilian G-Class will be presented in the first half of 2017 and the sales will start in autumn 2017 as a 2018 model generation.
